The Best Natural Remedies for PCOS

PCOS is an incredibly common condition in women that often impacts upon their fertility. Where fertility is concerned, PCOS can affect egg production and ovulation and in some women can also cause anovulation, a condition where the woman is not able to produce an egg without medical intervention. While the exact cause of PCOS is still unknown, the menstrual irregularities it causes are the result of various hormonal imbalances.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome can’t be cured, but there are excellent management options available. Furthermore, some of the best ways to deal with the condition are completely natural. Diet and lifestyle can play a significant role in restoring the hormonal balance. In fact, they can contribute to the restoration of spontaneous ovulation in women with this issue.

Treating PCOS Naturally

Improve Your Diet

Management through diet is the best natural treatment for PCOS. In fact, many women who want to get pregnant, but also suffer from PCOS, accomplish their goal through a few nutritional changes. However, when making changes to your diet it is important to stick with them in order to receive the benefits.

When it comes to this condition, you need to be very careful about carb intake because many women with PCOS suffer from insulin resistance. Avoid added sugars, white bread, rice and pasta. Opt for complex carbs that have a lower glycemic index and that don’t elevate blood sugar levels quickly.

Increase the amount of proteins and healthy fats that you are consuming. Butter is an excellent option for women with the hormonal imbalance. Grass-fed, organic butter is very high in fat-soluble vitamins, and it plays a vital role in restoring fertility. Other healthy fats to opt for include avocados, coconut oil, lard, full-fat dairy and extra-virgin coconut oil.

It is also important to be aware of foods that affect hormone levels. Soy, for example, may have an effect on hormones because it contains phyto-estrogens. Plant-based estrogens aren’t hormones per se but they may interfere with the delicate endocrine balance in the female body.

Fish Oil and Other Supplements

Supplements are also needed to restore ovulation and improve period regularity. Fish oil is an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids. It helps reduce the levels of androgens and enhance the insulin sensitivity of women with PCOS.

Folic acid and inositol also deliver excellent results. Clinical trials show that inositol reduces testosterone levels and it increases the chances of having spontaneous ovulation. Italian researchers discovered that 23 percent of women with PCOS who take an inositol supplement achieve ovulation in comparison to 13 percent of women with the condition who weren’t taking the supplement.

Working out and reducing your weight if your BMI is above the norm can increase the chance of ovulation occurring.

Exercise can also help women with PCOS because it increases insulin sensitivity. Women who suffer from the condition need to do both cardio and resistance workouts. A combination of these two forms of exercise will assist with weight loss and lead to improved hormonal balance.

One thing to remember is that excessive exercise doesn’t get the job done. Working out frantically will burden the adrenal glands, which can lead to a powerful inflammatory response. Inflammation makes PCOS symptoms worse.

Stop Drinking Coffee

If you’re trying to get pregnant, quitting coffee is definitely going to be a good idea. It’s an even better choice for women suffering from PCOS.

Coffee increases the levels of estrogen. Only two cups of coffee per day can quickly boost estrogen levels, according to fertility studies. Four to five cups of coffee lead to a 60 to 70 percent increase in the hormone. High estrogen levels can make it even more difficult for eggs to mature in the ovaries.

There are various types of decaffeinated beverages you can opt for. This way, you’ll get to enjoy the delicious scent without jeopardizing your hormonal balance.

Try a Few Natural Remedies

Several foods and herbs are known to stimulate ovulation and regulate the periods of women suffering from PCOS. You can test a few of these for several months to figure out whether your menstrual cycle is improving. However, when taking supplements or herbal remedies, it is recommended seek the advice of a qualified herbalist or naturopath so they can advise you on the best herbs and supplements for you.

Cinnamon is one of the natural remedies said to be good for women with PCOS. Cinnamon helps to regulate insulin production, and it can also help for curbing food cravings.

Apple cider vinegar (you can consume an apple cider vinegar tonic first thing every morning) is also beneficial. It’s a natural treatment for insulin resistance and it helps for the maintenance of steady blood sugar levels.

When consuming apple cider vinegar, always dilute it in warm water and never cold.

Several other herbs and natural substances that could potentially be beneficial for women suffering from PCOS include evening primrose oil, ashwagandha, red clover, dandelion root, nettle and rose hips.

Remember that a universal solution for the treatment of PCOS doesn’t exist. A natural remedy that will help one woman isn’t necessarily going to produce the same results for somebody else as women are affected by PCOS in varying degrees.

Have a consultation with your ob-gyn and focus on the natural remedies that you find practical and easy to implement. Observe your body for changes and if you don’t get the desired response, you can try another approach.

Be sure to seek out the help of a qualified herbalist or naturopath for guidance on the best herbs and supplements for you. If you are already taking any kind of medication, then it is also important to consult your doctor to find out if any of the herbal remedies or supplements may interfere with your medication.
