Meditation is probably the easiest way to accomplish stress relief, from a time conservation perspective. You can do it anywhere, anytime, for however long you can or need to.
I know some of you might be thinking, this isn’t my thing. It doesn’t have to be the spiritual journey that some think it might be…or it could be…it is what you make it. It’s meant to be a form of distraction and stress relief from the everyday hustle and bustle going on around you.
It can be as formal or informal as you’d like it to be. Just like yoga, there are plenty of guided options online for you to choose from as a starter. Yoga studios also often offer classes on meditation (yoga is also considered a form of meditation).
Meditation requires a few basic elements: focused attention, a quiet setting (if you can block out what’s around you then that works too), a comfortable position, relaxed breathing, and an open mind.
Guided meditations help you to focus on all of these pieces little by little, helping you to improve on your meditative skills to eventually proceed on your own.
Be aware of what your body is doing throughout. Are your shoulders tense? Relax them while still paying attention to your breathing
Another thing that many people do throughout their meditations is repeating a mantra. Whether it is spiritual, religious, or just something that makes you feel good, a mantra can help to clear your mind of clutter and stressful thoughts. An example of this is maybe a prayer or something like the well-known, “om,” or something like “I change my thoughts, I change my world.”
It can help to keep your mind focused on that one thing, blocking out all other distractions, allowing your mind and body to become more relaxed. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you feel that you aren’t “doing it right.”
Meditation is a learned skill and takes some time to perfect. Just remember the goal is for stress relief, there’s no one way to do it right. No matter if it’s for 1 minute or 1 hour, work your way to a place of comfort and take your mind off of the day-to-day.
