It’s no surprise that a lot of people use exercise as a form of stress relief. I’m definitely one of them.
It helps to produce endorphins, the feel-good hormones, which naturally help to curb your stress. You may think that you have no time to exercise, but it doesn’t take much. Pretty much any type of exercise or movement can work as a stress reliever, whether it be aerobic, yoga, climbing stairs, or swimming.
Start slow if you haven’t worked out in a while. Building up your fitness level slowly is important, firstly to avoid injuries and secondly to ease yourself into your new habit.
Something that has worked for me in the past is scheduling whatever activity you want to accomplish into your calendar. By making it an “appointment” you are more likely to hold yourself accountable. Even adding in a 10 minute slot here and there is a great start to creating a habit.
Give yourself credit for doing a good job if all you can do at first is walking up the stairs daily at work. A good base level is taking three 10-minute walks throughout a day if you can’t fit in one 30-minute session. Make sure you try to build momentum and set new and higher goals for yourself each workout or each week.
Something else that really helps me keep a routine is finding a friend or loved one to work out with. My husband and I have made it a habit to go to the gym several days a week together. That motivation pushed us both to create this habit, so when one of us can’t make it, the other still goes, which further motivates the both of us.
Remember, moderate exercise is good for your fertility and stress reduction, but excessive exercise could work against you.
The ideal amount of exercise for stress reduction as well as fertility boosting is around 3-4 hours of moderate exercise a week.
