Naturopathy: Approaching Fertility in a Natural Way

If you’re struggling with a fertility issue, you know that finding a viable solution can be a difficult task. Naturopathy offers a good possibility that many women have already tested. Here’s what you need to know about the approach and the positive manner in which naturopathy can affect female fertility.

Nearly 6.7 million women in the US alone are affected by fertility issues, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine reports. The problem is widespread all over the world, making it very difficult for millions of couples to conceive naturally.

Assisting Female Fertility With Naturopathy

What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is defined as a system of alternative healing practices and natural therapies for the purpose of health improvement. Some of the techniques that could be included in a naturopathic treatment include diet changes, detoxification, exercise, herbal medicine, acupuncture, acupressure and many others.

The Hippocratic School of Medicine gave birth to naturopathic practices in 400 BC. Hippocrates believed in a holistic approach, finding the cause of the disease and using nature to come up with a solution.

A naturopathic treatment is usually personalized to address the specific needs of the patient. Thus, one person may benefit from diet changes and ozone therapy while another could be recommended an entirely different approach for their individual needs. This personalization enables the targeting of a problem in a highly specific way, which contributes to better results overall.

Naturopathic Treatments for Female Infertility

Women who find it difficult to conceive naturally, as well as women who are preparing for IVF or insemination procedures, can benefit from a naturopathic treatment.

One of the most common recommendations in such instances includes diet and lifestyle changes. A healthy diet consisting of fruits, vegetables and beneficial fats can be used to promote hormonal balance and even treat fertility issues like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

Natural supplements and herbs can also be utilized for the purpose of regulating the menstrual cycle, provoking regular ovulation and improving the quality of eggs. Black Cohosh, Dong Quai, liquorice, chaste tree and wild yam are some of the herbs commonly used for the purpose of overcoming a reproductive problem.

There are several other recommendations naturopaths could make for the treatment of the particular problem. Protecting the body from exposure to chemicals and pollutants, undergoing fertility acupuncture, stopping the consumption of caffeinated beverages, eliminating processed foods and finding an effective stress management therapy can all contribute to massive improvements in reproductive health.

The Benefits of Naturopathic Infertility Treatments

Many pharmaceutical fertility treatments involve the use of hormones and invasive therapies like in vitro fertilization (IVF). While these approaches can increase the chance of a pregnancy taking place, they also come with an array of side effects that some women aren’t willing to accept.

Naturopathic treatments involve no hormones, pharmaceutical products or invasive procedures. As a result, they’re generally a much safer option.

A naturopathic treatment is also a lot more affordable than getting IVF or an intrauterine insemination (IUI). Thus, people who can’t afford such procedures may first opt for naturopathy in an attempt to achieve conception without medical assistance.

With all that being said, however, it also depends on the reasons for the infertility issues as to what path may be most appropriate for you. For example, if there are physical blockages in the fallopian tubes then the person will most likely need some kind of invasive treatments such as a laparoscopy to help resolve the issue or opt for IUI treatment to become pregnant. Therefore, it is always recommended first to get a proper diagnosis from your doctor before deciding upon a course of treatment.

There are a high number of cases of infertility which have been diagnosed as ‘unexplained infertility’. In these cases, the doctors have been unable to find any physical, chemical or hormonal reason for infertility. These cases may often respond well to naturopathic treatment as the cause may, therefore, lie in improper nutrition, poor lifestyle choices of emotional stress.

There’s a lot of evidence about the effectiveness of herbs, acupuncture and other alternative treatments for female infertility.

Acupuncture

A comprehensive overview of clinical studies was presented in the International Journal of Women’s Health in 2014. Researchers looked at 114 relevant documents and they found out that acupuncture improves menstrual health and it has a positive impact on reproductive functioning. While the exact mechanism of delivering results isn’t known yet, researchers agree that practices like acupuncture can help couples with problems achieve a pregnancy faster.

Herbs

Clinical studies about the effectiveness of herbs produce similar results. A detailed data examination was presented in the Complementary Therapies in Medicine journal. Researchers found out that Chinese herbal remedies can increase pregnancy rates two times within a four-month period (in comparison to hormonal fertility treatments or IVF).

Obviously, the experience of a naturopath and the severity of the fertility issue will be determining for the treatment outcome. If you’re dealing with a fertility problem, you should definitely consider a natural approach and some lifestyle changes.

Take some time to assess the reputations of naturopaths and make sure that you feel comfortable with the recommended therapeutic approach prior to getting started.
