You may or may not have heard that Brazil nuts can help with trying to conceive. Let’s be honest, some of you may have never even heard of one, let alone considered them when trying to have a baby. Until recently, I hadn’t given them much thought. I just remember seeing them at a market when I was little and thinking they were a really strange looking nut…and they are.
Well, there may be some truth to this nut being a fertility superfood, or at least having some benefits that you can’t otherwise get from other foods as easily. What makes them so special is that they’re packed with Selenium. Selenium has long been studied in its benefits with male fertility, but it’s only recently been discovered to possibly aid female fertility as well.
It increases the actions of antioxidants, which help prevent free radicals from damaging cells. This is very important in both egg and sperm quality. When it comes to the female egg, did you know that it takes about 70-90 days to mature before ovulation? That’s right, our bodies house all the eggs we’ll ever have from birth, but each one has a period of maturation that it undergoes before being released at ovulation.
It’s very important that we make any changes, whether it be lifestyle, dietary or vitamins for at least 90 days before trying to conceive or doing any fertility treatments. This way we give our bodies the best chance at producing a healthy egg, which gives you the best chances of having a healthy pregnancy.
One single brazil nut is your serving per day. The reason for this is because the amount of selenium in a single nut is about 70-80 mcg. That’s around the recommended amount per day. Too much selenium can have damaging effects, so be sure to stay within the limit.
They’re about an inch in length on average. They aren’t my favorite nut, but if a serving is only one, I can handle the flavor. I typically pair mine with other nuts, namely cashews lately. Nuts are great for fertility and super healthy in general (in moderation). A handful of other nuts with your one Brazil nut is a fair serving. They provide healthy fats, but of course you can always have too much, so limit consumption to a handful or two a day with your one Brazil nut.
This is one of the foods that you don’t really need to worry as much about it being organic, since the nut is grown inside of a hard shell. Of course, I always prefer to buy organic if you can find it, regardless, but I haven’t yet found Brazil nuts that are organic. It could just be that they aren’t available where I live, but as I said, it’s not as important as with fruits or vegetables that you eat the skin of.
You should be able to find them in your local grocery store without any issues, go get a bag today!
