The acai berry is a well-known and powerful antioxidant. Increasing your intake of foods and supplements high in antioxidants is extremely important whenever trying to conceive, especially if you are over 35 or preparing for or undergoing any fertility treatments. The reason for this is because they help our bodies fight the damaging effects that free-radicals have on our cells.
The damage from free-radicals has a direct effect on sperm and egg quality. Both sperm and eggs take approximately 70-90 days to mature. Feeding your cells (specifically the mitochondria – where the cells get their energy from) with antioxidants during this period allows the eggs and sperm to function at their highest capabilities. So, it’s important to increase your intake of healthy foods like acai berries and supplements like acai supplements that are extremely high in antioxidants for a period of at least 90 days prior to any fertility treatments.
A recent study that was performed by CCRM (a very popular and highly successful fertility clinic that is often referred to as a “last resort” by patients undergoing IVF) is putting a spotlight on the fertility benefits that come from adding acai berry supplements to your diet. This study was performed on women undergoing IVF with a median age of 37 that had all had previous at least one failed IVF cycle.
All participants in the study took an acai berry supplement for a period of 8 to 12 weeks prior to IVF. The study found that 81% had an ongoing clinical pregnancy rate, as compared to the 37.8% national average for 37-year-olds. The mean number of eggs retrieved increased from 15.8 to 20.6 and the mean number of eggs fertilized went from 8.1 to 11.5. This is considered to be statistically significant.
This particular study concentrated on the use of acai supplements. Typical recommended dosages are 1,000 mg to 2,000 mg per day. You can also get the same extremely high concentration of antioxidants in the fruit itself. Given, it’s not so easy to find acai berries in their true form, but you can usually find it in your freezer section. Making smoothies or acai bowls like the one pictured above are a great use of the frozen variety. It’s said that acai berries may be higher in antioxidants than cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, or blueberries. That’s huge!
They are a bit costlier than their other berry counterparts, however the supplements are a great way to get the high levels of antioxidants without breaking the bank.
