If you’re anything like me, you wanted to be pregnant yesterday. You’re making the right choice by doing your research and learning the methods that will give you the best chance of conceiving in the shortest amount of time.
If you’re somewhere in the beginning stages of trying to have a baby, or maybe you’re thinking about starting soon…then you’re in the right place. These 6 tips are for those that have maybe been trying for a few months and haven’t had luck yet.
Chart Your Periods
One of the very first things you can do in the beginning phases of trying to have a baby is charting your periods. If you’re not familiar with this concept, the basic principle is to track your menstrual cycle from start to finish.
There are several great applications that you can do this with. One in particular that is very popular is called Glow. It’s very advanced and includes categories where you can add details like your moods, symptoms (like bloating, acne, etc.), your cervical mucus, temperature tracking and more.
The apps will then put all of the information together and tell you when you’re likely ovulating. This window is your ideal time to have sex to optimize your chances of getting pregnant.
There are more advanced methods of ovulation prediction than by simply charting. Those include ovulation prediction kits, basal body temperature monitoring and cervical mucus observation.
Ovulation prediction kits is a much more accurate way of predicting ovulation. They use urine to analyze hormones in your body that surge whenever you are close to or at ovulation.
Basal body temperature monitoring uses your body’s temperature first thing in the morning before you get up out of bed. Your body temperature rises slightly just after ovulation and if you become pregnant it will stay at this higher temperature.
Cervical mucus sends us clear messages when your body is ready to ovulate. It will change in appearance from creamy or cloudy into an egg white like consistency. Following this along with the other methods (at least 2 together) will greatly help you understand when you’re ovulating much more easily.
This may seem extremely obvious, but healthy habits are a big deal when trying to conceive. Things like smoking, higher body mass index (BMI) and alcohol and caffeine consumption can all be a massive road block.
Cutting out smoking, getting into a healthy weight range, eating right and limiting caffeine and alcohol are the best things you can do to set yourself up for success. Sustaining these healthy habits for at least 3 months before trying to get pregnant is ideal.
Both sperm and eggs mature in around 70 to 90 days. So, in order to see the effects on your fertility, you’ll need to sustain these habits for at least that amount of time. There’s no better time to start than now!
Now that you know when you’re ovulating and you’re getting your body healthy and ready for baby, it’s time to have sex. The most important step in the process is making sure you’re having sex at the right time.
Did you know that once you ovulate your egg has a window of only 12 to 24 hours to be fertilized? I know, crazy! This is why you realize how much of a miracle pregnancy really is. There are a lot of obstacles!
Fortunately, though, sperm can live inside of a woman for around 5 to 7 days. So even if our ovulation prediction is extremely accurate, this gives us a bit of a larger window than we’d otherwise have.
The position you’re using is not very important, but what is important is how often you’re having sex. Ideally, you should be having sex every other day when you’re expecting ovulation. If your prediction kit says you’re at peak ovulation, then you should have sex for that day and the next.
Get A Pre-Conception Check-Up
Your OBGYN can do a workup which will include an examination with ultrasound and bloodwork. This will better tell them if there are any obstacles in place that they will need to address sooner than later.
I always recommend this to women who are trying to conceive or are thinking of starting soon. My most important advice would be to make sure that you’re mentioning everything (big or little) to them. Things like heavier periods, clotting, painful menstruation, acne, excess facial hair, hair loss, or absent menstruation can all be signs of conditions that could cause infertility.
Unfortunately, they are also things that could happen to any one of us for many other reasons, which make it that much more important to mention all. A combination of these things could lead your doctor to diagnosis sooner than later.
The truth is, a lot of these conditions can be easily disguised as something else and are easily overlooked. Being forthcoming with any symptoms that seem “off’ could be the difference between trying for months or years longer than necessary.
Know When It’s Time to Get Help
If you are under 35 and you’ve been trying to conceive for over a year, or if you’re over 35 and you’re been trying to conceive for over 6 months, it may be time to see a fertility doctor.
If you know you have a condition that could cause infertility like endometriosis or PCOS, you may want to consider speaking with a fertility doctor sooner than later.
Even though our OBGYNs are very well versed in all things reproductive system and pregnancy, unfortunately they are not nearly as familiar with the specifics of infertility. If you feel that you need additional assistance, then don’t be afraid to get the help you may need.
There’s no shame in getting help sooner than later. Like I said, if you were ready to be pregnant yesterday like me, then imagine holding off because you’re embarrassed or afraid, and wasting that much more time.
If you hurt your back, you’d see a specialist to fix it, right? Same thing here! Why not trust in an expert for one of the most important things you will ever do in your life?
Alright, well, it looks like you’re all set up. Now don’t forget to make the process fun!
